I bought a prepaid card for my grandsons birthday (I wanted a gift card). When activating they wanted a SS number.

I didn't know his so I gave them my daughters from an old tax return. They froze the account because of an age discrepancy with the SS. They asked for 3 forms of ID from the 12 year old. They would not give up the kids money after numerous phone complaints and letters.

Only after I filed a small claims action did they tell me they would refund the money. But now the price went up because of filing fees and process service.

We'll see where this goes. This bank is rotten to the core.

I had a bad experience with Meta Bank. They lied to me basically so they could hold on to my money. I complained to the Attorney General's Office in my State where I learned that no one had written in a similar complaint so they could do nothing!!!!

Meta Bank basically markets their product through other businesses who will push the card off on their customers who might other wise never use Meta Bank, they also market their prepaid network branded cards using many, many different brands, and then they have over 550 different product lines of their own. The name Meta Bank is only in small letters on the back. In my case, it was next to impossible to reach Meta Bank using that number and I had no access to a computer. Meta Bank, knowing that I would be overseas criticized me for not contacting them repeatedly during that time after I had contacted them once and been told the problem was fixed, but still could not use the card. I had no money; it was all left with Meta Bank to put on the travel card, but Meta Bank didn't do that. They just held on to my money so that I would not have access to it when I needed it when I was overseas. Had they told me they could not reload my card before I left, I would not have given them $5,000.00 in cash money, I would have kept that with me for my own use, but as it was Meta Bank had full use of my cash money and I was left to live more like a homeless person for four weeks.

I had worked all of my life, saving up so that in retirement, I could travel and enjoy life. What did Meta Bank do with my $5,000.00 in cash for 4 weeks? If I had owed Meta Bank that amount of money for 4 weeks what kind of fees and interest would they have charged me for a short term loan? Meta Bank is not a good nor reliable place so If I had lent them money, I would have had to charge them whatever they charge for their iAdvance rates for short term loans, I figure.

The reasons they gave for not loading my travel debit card were so ridiculous that they challenge common sense.

When I complained to my state's attorney general's office, I learned that no one else had written in to complain so that nothing could be done to stop Meta Bank

Part of the problem may be that Meta Bank operates using so many different names and that Meta Bank uses other companies to market their product so that the complaints are or may be filed using another name besides Meta Bank.

May I urge you to write to your state and US Senators and Representatives asking for Bank Reforms that will actually protect consumers from this kind of predatory practices. Also please write to your State Attorney General's Office to complain about Meta Bank

Then send yet another letter to

Office of Thrift Supervision

Department of the Treasury

Consumer Affairs Division

1700 G Street, NW

Washington, DC 20552

Please know that Meta Bank and a non-profit that they helped to found paid more than any other organization to Rupli, a DC lobbyist, in 2009 trying to get legislation passed to their advantage regarding the prepaid debit cards.

We do not want Meta Bank in control of the USA just because they now have the money to throw around to do this. Please speak out to protect the general American public from predatory banks like Meta Bank.

I purchased an Only1 prepaid debit card for gasoline purchases to avoid using my bank checkcard and to pay at the pumps. The card I purchased was a $100.00 card.

The total cost was $106.00 at the register. The following morning I tried to use the card at the pumps only to discover the card was only good for in store purchases. I prepaid for $20.00 worth of gas and left with the intention of spending the balance immediately and eliminating the card. Imagine my surprise when 30 minutes later I discovered the balance on the card was $5.

Thats right!!! I paid $106.00 for a card with a purchase value of $25.00
